Ceramic Medusa tiles

4 tiles - 3" x 8" each.  Click to enlarge.

These tiles were pressed from a plaster mold that I made using the following steps:

1.  Construct a master tile using additive (more clay!) and subtractive (carving) processes.

2.  Position the still-wet master tile on a piece of plastic.  Build a walled container around the tile using corrugated cardboard.

3.  Seal cracks with clay and coat the tile with a release agent (Murphy's oil).

4.  Pour plaster over the tile and leave overnight to harden.

5.  Remove master tile and discard (clay will contain particles of plaster and should not be fired)

6.  Let the mold dry completely.  This can take a few days.

7.  Mold is ready!  Press clay into the mold to create new tiles.
