HERsay
My talented friend and artist, Sheila Norgate is always full of good ideas. She paints curiously, writes honestly and performs her own productions which are humorous, pointed and personal. I admire how she truly lives through her art.
Sheila usually has something interesting cooking and right now, it is ‘Hersay’, an art exhibition about women authors - dead or alive. Sheila invited 6 visual artists to submit a response to this theme. Each artist, including Sheila, decides how to portray their chosen author on a 12” x 12” cradled wood panel. I love a challenge and was pretty thrilled with the concept.
I thought long and hard about my subject. I considered the many excellent Canadian women authors I have read (Margaret Laurence, Alice Munro, Carol Shields, Elizabeth Hay etc.) but settled on Anna Komnene (1083 - 1153), the author of The Alexiad. Why? Because it is a first-hand chronicle of the political and military history of the Byzantine empire and remains one of the major sources of information on medieval court life, politics and the crusades. And that, is freaking cool.
Hersay runs from Nov 2 2022 to Jan 3 2023 at the Gabriola library
